"matahari" by Catharine Neilson
Opening night I Saturday the 11th of March 6pm till 8pm, 2024
Showing dates I 2nd of March till the 25th of March
Catharine Neilson is an emerging documentary photographer based in Newcastle, Australia. Her Indonesian and Australian heritage informs her work, which focuses on everyday life, human nature, family and time.
Catharine Neilson finds herself repeatedly drawn to the same ordinary things: flowers, birds, objects dropped and forgotten, plants growing, water. They represent the feelings and questions that preoccupy her thoughts. A flower, for example, can be an expression of beauty, resilience, the cycles of nature, the way humans cultivate loveliness and the ways we disrupt and cause harm.
In Indonesia they call the sun ‘matahari’. It gives life, it marks the passage of time and illuminates. These images are a meditation on everyday life; an invitation to linger in the in-between moments.
