ABOUT THE ARTIST
Giorgia Bel (b. 1990) is a self-taught artist who began painting in 2015 during a period of illness. What began as a means of coping soon evolved into an enduring passion.
Bel’s practice is grounded in memory, imagination, and a tender, melancholic connection to place, person, and experience. Rendered in milky, dirtied-down colour and suffused with the shifting tones of dawn and dusk, her works evoke drenched landscapes alive with vitality. Skeletal trees emerge through Rothko-like washes, as the known and imagined dissolve into one another.
Her portraits explore intimacy, memory, and the emotional residue of lived experience. Rather than seeking to simply record likeness, Bel uses the figure as a vessel for remembrance and feeling, allowing bodies to emerge from hazy, dream-like fields of colour. The figures often inhabit a space between the familiar and imagined, evoking loved ones, fragments of memory, dream-time, and the quiet experiences of everyday life. In this way, her portraits become less about a singular moment and more about the shifting nature of how we remember and hold the people, places, and experiences that shape us. Underpinning Bel’s practice is a belief in art as medicine—a means of processing, preserving, and returning to the emotional landscapes of our lives.
ARTIST STATEMENT
MOTHER DREAMS
""I began to dream—a dream repeated.
Angels gathered around me, attentive and near. Yet their gaze was not only upon me, but upon the life growing quietly within. The most vulnerable among us; a person not able to speak for themselves. An unborn child, held in mystery and becoming.
There is something profoundly beautiful in this—the youngest of our race, arriving already watched over.
Throughout this pregnancy, these dreams have brought me comfort. Their presence has settled in me as a deep and abiding peace. In this work, that unseen feeling finds form. What appeared first in dreams now revealed on canvas: figures of watchfulness, tenderness, and strength, painted while I await the arrival of the small life within me.
The land continues to speak at this time. Perhaps it has never seemed more beautiful. It bears life endlessly, offering and offering again. Warm and cool, bright and fading, day and night folding into one another. The air rushes through the trees until they meet and hold together.
And yet, beneath all movement, there is stillness.
I wait here—in the shelter of the angels’ watching, within a landscape that sustains, nourishes, and brings forth good things. Surrounded by this abundance, I find myself returning to a simple knowing:
it is well.
It is well with my soul.""
