'SACRED WOMEN IN SACRED SPACES' I YVETTE TEN-BOHMER

OPENING NIGHT I SATURDAY the 20th of APRIL, 6pm till 8pm

SHOWING DATES I SATURDAY the 20th of April till WEDNESDAY the 8th of MAY, 2024

YVETTE TEN-BOHMER is a Newcastle artist who graduated from the National Art School.

Yvette explores the figure considering angles, motions, shadows, weight, line and anatomy. I pursue the limbs of the human form with distortion to allude to the energy and action rather than the true realism of the pose. Capturing and expressing human life with gestural marks created by observation using feeling derived by visual sensation; enables a raw expressive mark entwining and forming into the figure.

A word from Yvette

For the first time ever, I have moved away from the naked figure. I have previously explored nudity as a symbol of strength, ownership, and a celebration of what the feminine body is. Exposing the naked female form and presenting it to the viewer demanded respect, adoration, and a celebration of the strength a woman has and is. I have always insisted the viewer was to envision themselves into my paintings, thinking of a woman in their life that has been there in a special womanly manner. And if the viewer saw themselves; even better.

This body of work moves away from the naked form. I began to see that not all women were comfortable with the notion of nudity for strength. I began to observe how women can transform instantly due to an outfit. I asked a few friends if I could use them as my subjects. My task was to explore how a piece of fabric could be transformed into confidence and joy. This is the ultimate statement of respect for women which celebrates their individuality.

This is my body of work. 'Sacred Women in Sacred Spaces'.
