Eira Chidgey is a mixed media abstract artist who draws inspiration from daily life and lived experiences. A background in textile design and a first-class honours degree in Contemporary Applied Arts have created a love of surface texture, resulting in the inclusion of found materials and stitch in much of her work. She has been included in several group and solo shows in the UK and Australia, and has maintained her art practice for over a decade.

After three years in the UK, A Place For All The Small Things is Eira’s first solo exhibition since her return to Newcastle at the end of 2023, featuring work predominantly completed over the last year inspired by moments with her children and domestic life.  In a society that typically judges child rearing and home duties as “not enough”, Eira sets out to elevate the perceived mundane realities of family life by celebrating everyday events within her work. Responding intuitively, colour, shape and texture are built meditatively; ambiguous marks allow the viewer freedom for their own interpretation while partially submerged shapes within the many layers hint at subconscious thoughts and experiences. Lighthearted and whimsical, this body of work seeks to rekindle memories of childhood, recreate a connection to self and generate an appreciation for simple things.
